Odds to Win the Mid-Season Tourney

The views, opinions & predictions of this prognosticator are not necessarily those of BOSL, its executive or anyone related to Ron Evinou. Don’t take this seriously as you know I don’t… Last year at our Mid-Season Tournament we introduced the Robert Grenier Cup and our Winners (Tournament Champions) were VanderHout Flooring (VF) as they defeated Bobbleheads Canada in our 2018 Championship match and VA defeated CBBR to take the Consolation Championship - did I call that or what!?

Team Odds Prognostication
McCleary Electric
(ME)
2/1

Most Runs For in the league right now and on a 5-0-0 stretch... ME seems unbeatable but how will they fare against the big bats of Carson Law this weekend? Oh wait they already beat them 14-8 a few days ago. Looks like nothing is in their way this season. Captains Ron Vandermeulen and Jeff Palmer and team ME won this tourney in 2011 and won the consolation in 2010 and I believe they were runners up about 10 times or so. So far the team is lead by the monster Jason Townsley (6 HRs) and batting almost .800. Even though Ron is a solid hall of fame pitcher, they have (even better) Scott Sinclair at the plate this year. Dale Latendresse and Rob Green are next in batting (no surprize). Bobby Betker is just showing off though ahead of son-in-law Peter Lang. Even Stuart du Kamp is batting .750 for them! Go ahead and print the t-shirts now guys.

Carson Law (CL) 3/1

We do know that captain Wes Meier hates the rain so if its cloudy, Wes will not be in a good mood and that may help his sub-par batting average so far. One of the captains' notes for 2019 said batting leader Ryan Carson might not be available to play the mid-season but Elkins and Meier took a chance and drafted him anyway. They used their 2nd pick to take rookie Des Janes who is a 25 year slo-pitch pro. He dazzled us all at the batting cage evals and he's come through in spades for CL. We weren't quite sure who would end up better - Chris Fost (his bud on team DC) or Des but so far Des is leading the way. I've heard pitchers say this team has nothing but bats pretty much tied with ME right now. This team has 15 HRs already and a solid Defense! I think Derek Lutz s the only batter not hitting over .600 right now. Can Kevin and Wes coach Derek to fill in for Ryan if in fact he does end up missing out? Murray de Vos (don't forget this guy) is hitting .800+ as is Derek Graham. Chuck Hines and Mike Starr are hitting better than Elkins at almost .700.

Carline Muffler
(CM)
4/1

Shane look where CM is in the standings! Captains Todd Parker and Dave Muill have a contender here! Only BOHC has better defense right now. Todd who usually hits about 6 or so HRs in a season already has 2 so I suspect he is hoping he gets to play against team LRL in the first round -- his average went all the way up to .450 after that game. I think speedster RJ Raha also went .1000 in that game. Even though Muill is leading the team in batting, you have to watch out for Neil Marsh - always a threat. Joe Celi is hitting .750 and killing us at SS and they have ace JT Badiani (new guy) on the mound. These guys look like a serious threat for the championship round.

Deeth & Company
(DC)
5/1

Peter (we're more than just doug) Afelski and Doug Vollans picked FIVE new players this season! 2nd baseman Kevin Henderson, now in his 4th season with us leads this team batting .875 followed by new guy David Quinn at .770 (no one expected Dave to hit so well). Next up is new guy Nolan Young with 3HR although all three were aginst me! You can't miss Nolan - he's the most enthusiastic guy in BOSL - just marginally ahead of Todd Parker...( very welcome to our league). And let's not forget that right now Vollans Sr (76 yrs) is hitting better than Vollans Jr. Pick it up sonny! Team sponsor Richard Krummenacher is hitting at will so far and doing even better than Chris Fost - the over-rated new guy SS, but Chis will miss the Mid Season anyway so we will have to wait to see if he can deliver on the huge expectations.

QB Sports Bar
(QBS)
6/1

This team has above average Run support and D. Peter Winstanley and Randy Kobryn thought they were just drafting a group that would be good at the bar but ended up with a solid 4th place team. Steve Koritko is having one of his good seasons batting over .900 with 4 HRs. EIGHT players hitting over .700 right now leads all of us... Ace at the mound Peter Woodhouse and Larry Beatty helps these guys. I predict a consolation championship for them. Nice to see Tony Ortoleva with 3 HRs and over .700 - overcoming his injuries! Rod McLeod is hitting .790 so far!! Where was that last year?

Verwey Automotive
(VA)
7/1

Thanks for stepping up to be captains this year boys! The new improved Glen Baxby joined with Andy Morrison for the first overall pick in the draft. We all advised them not to waste their first pick on Aaron McLean thinking there was no way he could repeat his numbers from last year but would they listen?! He's already at 5 HRs batting .930! No surprize at all that Chris Burr is 2nd batting .860 (which is probably low for him). They knew Brian Veerman would deliver - hitting .833 with a couple dingers. Mike Maycock is probably the best pitcher in the league but never gets the stats to back it up. John Cliffe usualy does much better - could be a contract issue - I heard he wanted to play for Hindley's team so he probably needs more support here.

Jerry's Automotive
(JA)
8/1

Well they are a PLUS 14 even though they're almost in last place right now. If you didn't know, there is some sort of Jerry's curse that makes them all come alive for the tournaments. That's the only reason I didn't place them at 30/1. Dave Rombough continues to shine, leading this team in batting at .824 (1HR). That's better than Roy Jones at .778 (2HRs). Mike Porkolab and Doug Haines grabbed last years first pick overall Derek Irving in the second round and he's delivering with 6 HRs hitting .765. Also of note every year is Jerry Weninger batting .500 yet again! This guy will never slow down. So no big surprizes in JA this season but they have lots of power and great pitching. Remember when we would talk about Mike and Doug leading the team - what was that 10 years ago? Good luck guys

JNA Contracting
(JNA)
12/1

New look - same old great guys... The rest of us can pretty much take anyone we want in the draft but the Oakland Athletics team is forced to take sponsor David Mohamed (.786) and son Luke Harper (.850 1HR) but you know - that's family! I'm not sure if they are forced to take the Moose (Mike Wright) or not... Chris Boots Harper is slumping but he's contributing with 2HRs. JNA is doing well at the plate right now but we're worried about all the injuries (Drex, Nick, Watson, etc) - too bad they didn't draft a physiotherapist. I love this team - I'd want to play with them but I don't drink... I plan to cheer for team JNA to make it to the consolation final - will their knee braced hold up though.

Vanderhout Flooring
(VF)
15/1

The HR power is spread out on the team this season. WOW - Kerry Close is still batting 1.000 and pitching great. Every year he gets a new hip or body part, but it doesn't seem to affect his swing! In another class act, team VF retired Richard's #15 and they wear it on their shoulders (and hearts) this season. We knew Bert Sagheddu was good but we didn't expect him to be leading the team at .875 right behind Kerry! Good for Jay LeMay at .790 just ahead of co-captain Steve Bero at .750. 1st rounder Michael Proctor isn't in the top 10 right now - but they knew Mike is hit or miss, they must have picked him because he's a good guy or something we don't know about. Great to see Steve Dostal making a bit of a comeback with 1HR and almost .700 avg. Good luck this weekend boys!

Edward Jones
(EJ)
20/1

Captains Tom Perris and Jon Rideout always put together a great mix of players to support their own amazing batting prowess. It seems to me that all of last year's EJ players are batting .800 or higher this season! Must be a leadership issue... or much better leadership from these captains...Look at sponsor Peter Skoretz leading the team at .842! Jon is right behind him (as we would expect) at .833 and Paul McGrath is their third .800 hitter with a couple HRs. Lots of bats here but no defense... not sure what the problem is. Nice to see Tom pitching great at the mound this season. This team could surprize us all if the D improves. Loads of potential if Darren Andersen and Doug Emery keep batting so strong.

Burlington Oldtimers
Hockey League
(BOHC)
20/1

Welcome first-time captain Adam Harild! Thanks for joining John Andersen to captain team BOHC this season. The only trouble here is bats because they lead the entire leage with the best defense!! First rounder Philip Herbeson is delivering batting .900 not a surprize really, he is that good! Thomas McDowell is doing great batting .857 and then there are 6 guys batting close to .700. Peter Dovey is pitching well too. So loads of potential and the best D in BOSL - no reason why they can't shock us all. Don't forget they also have Jamie Porteous and Jarrod Schankula who have a reputation for batting near .900 every tournament.

Lougheed Heating
& Cooling
(LHC)
30/1

Welcome to BOSL new guy Tim Latimer, leading the team tied with Murray Stewart (1HR .875). Its early yet to figure out LHC since they've only played 3 games! Blake Mercer and Hall of Famer Greg Moore are doing great right now tied at .750. Can Captains Angelo Musitano and John Gibson get a batting coach this week to change their fortunes? What's with Shane Nevills this season - I though he could hit? Great people, just not great at the plate yet.

PhysioLinks Rehab
(PLR)
35/1

If there's one thing captains Erwin Mendosa and Chris Water do consistently its draft unpredicatable teams! The team is under-performing probably more than any other. Mike Gibbs is leading them all batting .900 followed by Erwin (.850 with 2HRs). Ed Meahan is batting .820 right now but no HRs yet, he is tied in batting with slugger and ace Pete Conick. Look at speedster Joe Medeiros (who did NOTHING last year) batting .750 - way to go Joe! Even Brian Blume was hitting .800 last week! First baseman Willi Jesso has contributed a couple HRs so far. So you see the potential here - no idea why they aren't higher in the standings. They are a long shot but could prove me wrong.

The Door Dudes
(DD)
40/1

Welcome back to BOSL captain Dave Geneau...I think Jim Hindley was running out of co-captains so good luck Dave. This team was drafted mostly for their hockey sense and it's showing. Team DD was struggling at the plate early on but they are turning it around now, slowly. Way to go East-coaster (and pitching ace) Murray Alley leading the team batting .857. Who is Alvin Forbes?! He's batting .700 right now just behind Murray. There's nowhere to go but up for Bill Misener, Jim Kotsopolis and Glenn Downey... Do Dave and Jim have what it takes to turn this around... Everyone please say hi to Manager MIKE SILVA! So great to see Mike return this season.

L3M Freight Solutions
(L3M)
50/1

First round pick Mark Rankin is Mr All or Nothing so far with 5 HRs but no batting average. Did you know that co-captain Lawrence Thompson used to lead our leage in batting and HRs? Ron Evinou unfortunately is experiencing returning injury issues but he's still managing to lead the team with 3HRs at .750. Way to go Kyle Hadley - tied for top spot at .750 as well followed by Justin Lukings and wait for it... Mike Boyle!!! - no one saw that coming, a nice surprize for L3M. Then we have poor Lawrence struggling away and Steve Bourke still looking for the right bat. Richard Noble has 0 HRs right now but he hasn't been able to bat against me yet so that will change. Get it together guys - you know you are way better than what is showing in the standings.

Locker Room Lager
(LRL)
50/1 I swear we are not that bad of a team. The guys are being polite - keeping it together despite our woes at the plate and on the field. Mark Riley leads the team at .800 and 2HRs. Jim Seely is a fantastic pick batting second at .780 just in front of Carl Camilleri at .750. Unfortunately there's just not much else after that so far. Really happy to see Carl doing so well for us. I'm batting last as expected - and that's a good feeling when there are really no expectations :-) - we're kind of hoping the team sponsor gets us a cooler of beer to help us out!
